What's a Poetry Slam?
Poetry slams have crossed the border into the hearts of Canadians from all walks of life since it was cooked up in the soul-soaked city of Chicago in a jazz lounge just over a quarter century ago. Slams were created to transform spoken poetry from static readings for the artistic elite into stunning, interactive, dynamic, and competitive performances.
Anyone can sign up and members of the audience are selected to be judges at the slam, assigning each poetry performance a score from 0 to 10. Only original writing can be performed and no props or musical accompaniments are allowed; for three minutes, it’s just the poet, their poem, and an audience. Poets who compete in a slam have a chance to win the grand prize of $100.

Language and content of GSW events can sometimes be intense and triggering, while GPS is an all ages event and we do most often have an active listener on hand, attendees discretion is advised. Find out more about poetry slam rules and how you can try out for a spot on Guelph's poetry slam team.

Guelph Spoken Word operates on the traditional territory of the Chonnonton, Anishinaabek, and Haudenosaunee peoples, and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We acknowledge the Two Row Wampum and Dish With One Spoon Covenant, and are responsible for upholding the agreements our ancestors made here. Indigenous peoples are integral to the story of this land. It is up to each of us to repair the damage done by settlers and the state of Canada, and build relationships based on reciprocity, respect and reconciliation.
